Tips for Juvenile Fish Trapping and Identification (Module 11)

Note: Be sure to acquire all necessary permits before proceeding.

A variety of types of bait can be used, although salmon roe works best

Wrap the bait in a fine mesh or old stocking and hang it directly in front of the access hole.

Many hands make light work.

Place the traps in secure, hidden locations, just before nightfall.

Return to retrieve the traps early the next morning.

Open the traps and pour the smolts into a pail of water. Always handle fish over water.

Module 11 Image

Try not to take long with the fish in the pail, so they can be returned to the stream quickly.

Everyone can take part!

Measure from the tip of the nose to the "V" in the tail. Again, try not to keep the fish out of water for long.

Gently return fish to the creek when done.
